The University of New Mexico saves over $8,000 per month in RBC waste by switching to the HemoRoam mobile, battery-powered refrigerator on wheels. Click here Univ of New Mexico Poster on Blood Savings
If you are supporting an ECMO program at your hospital, then you know how important blood, plasma, and platelets are to the care of ECMO patients. On average, between 1-5 packed red blood cells (RBC’s) per day are transfused with platelet transfusions accounting for the largest portion.
You must keep these blood products near the ECMO patient for rapid access in the event of declining patient vitals. Are we really going to keep using beer coolers with ice packs to store blood products? Really?
HemoRoam8XL is a medical refrigeration unit for ECMO protocols in ICU settings. These mobile, battery-powered refrigerators come with a rechargeable battery pack, wheels, handle, platelet room temperature drawer and can be outfitted with data loggers to monitor the temperature of the refrigeration space, as well as, the platelet storage area. The battery pack can power the unit for 48 hours until it can be plugged in for battery recharge.
Blood bank employees can more confidently store blood products customized for the ECMO patients under their care and move easily out of the ICU by rolling with the ECMO patient. Our HemoRoamXL units come in three sizes and can be customized to fit any medical refrigerator need including blood, plasma, vaccines, pharma, and mother’s milk in maternity wards.
It is time for blood banking professionals to leave the ice age and use technology that makes blood and plasma transport safer.

Are you looking to reduce red blood cell wastage? The following information was provided to us at the 2016 AABB Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL.
A recent study by the University of New Mexico Health Science Center concludes that operating room (RBC) red blood cell wastage has decreased by 66% as a result of educating staff and deploying an LR8 Portable Medical Refrigerator.
The study aimed to reduce waste by providing refrigerators for certain surgeries, through a process improvement project which involved one of our ROW (Refrigerator On Wheels) units.
According to them, red blood cell wastage in the operating room during Jan – July 2015 was well above the average of 6.4%, but after implementing a ROW that number dropped to 2.1% by June 2016.
This reduction in RBC wastage reduced costs. It was further concluded that monitoring wastage was an important part of inventory management.
